According to results of experiments using super capacity impulse voltage supply systems and conventional lightning rods, as lightning striking distance increases, the discharge at the tip of the lightning rod (upward streamer) becomes unstable and discharges at a large number of points, including the side of the lightning rod. The report verified that although the lightning rod should receive the lightning strike at its tip, it also received the lightning strike on the side of the lightning rod. (Diagram 1) As a result, the conventional lightning rod becomes unable to absorb the entire lightning current. Consequently the lightning current loses its path for grounding. We cannot estimate or predict where the current will flow and this can lead to human injuries and accidents of substantial damage, including fires. In addition, when conventional lightning rods receive lightning currents on the side and cannot absorb the current, an unimaginable large electromagnetic wave occurs. In the past, antennas, radio, solar electricity equipment, and other equipment that require protection by the installation of lightning rods have conversely been put in the most dangerous situation. A professor at a television station stated, “Electromagnetic waves have the ability to flow 1 kilometer ahead.” Also, in the United States and in Europe, lawsuits have been filed regarding damages occurred by the installation of such lightning rods. We anticipate that before long, such similar suits will be filed in Japan due to the lightning rod’s role in such accidents. (Diagram 2)

This conventional lightning rod was installed in Tochigi prefecture on top of the Irohazaka Chuzenji Lake’s security and NHK morning weather forecast camera. After the summer when this lightning rod was installed, it received lightning from 2 to 4 times a year. The camera was destroyed and unable to transmit pictures of the landscape. NHK changed the lightning rod to the Juraisin Lightning Protection System and even though the system has received lightning every year over the past 5 years, there have been no reported accidents. |
