Lightning Completely Destroys Camera |
|
August 1995 |

|
The tip of the originally installed conventional lightning rod has become rounded.
It can be conjectured when the conventional lightning rod received the lightning strike, the earth electrode could not correspond to the lightning bolt potential of several million volts. The electric current of the lightning counter-flowed to the tip of the lightning rod, Joule heating occurred and the tip of the lightning rod melted. |

Although a lightning rod was installed to the NHK Morning Weather Camera, lightning struck the lightning rod 3 times in 1995. The camera was destroyed due to the lightning strikes.
In November 1996, we received a request from the Nikko Nature Museum and changed the conventional lightning rod to a Juraisin air terminal in December 1996. We also changed the earth electrode to the Juraisin Grounding System.
During the next year, there were 27 lightning storms in Tochigi Prefecture. However, there were no accidents to the camera. Since then, we have performed follow-ups and have not received any reports of damage. |
